Bob Groom had been interested in radio from the age of
5 when he owned his first crystal set. He was apprenticed during
the middle war period with Standard Telephones and Cables where
he learnt draftsmanship and toolmaking. He has not been employed
since 1948 when he formed a company building electronic test
equipment for TV manufacturers and the BBC in the early days of
television after the war. His firm joined up with Tektronix and
he became Managing Director and Operations Manager of Tektronix
UK Ltd. He also has an interest in photography and also had half
share in a boatyard on Bembridge Harbour. After retirement he
says he has never worked so hard in his life.
